Prior to the conclusion of their recent legislative session, The Oklahoma Legislature created a Clean Energy Independence Commission in response to the demand for the development of alternative energy sources.
The commission plans to take immediate steps to support federal efforts to address the energy needs of the citizens of this country. The commission will be comprised of a dedicated group of Oklahomans with experience in a variety of energy-related industries and will utilize Oklahoma’s resources to make a significant contribution to the nation’s efforts of achieving the goal of clean energy independence within the next five years.
With over 90% of Oklahoma’s energy being generated from either coal or natural gas, it is time for Oklahoma to tap into its vast wind resources. Currently, only 830 MW of electricity in Oklahoma is generated from wind power. Oklahoma has the potential to generate 82,700 MW.
The U.S. Department of Energy has a goal of supplying 20% of the power in the U.S. with wind-generated electricity by 2030. The Oklahoma Clean Energy Independence Commission can support this federal effort by helping Oklahomans as they harvest the clean, low cost energy that is right at their fingertips.
