Texas Grid Operator Faces Questions Over Blackouts
At the Texas grid operator's Austin headquarters on Monday afternoon, about 100 people crowded into a special board meeting to hear the grid's chief executive, Trip Doggett, discuss the events that led to the rolling blackouts across Texas on Feb. 2. Some 50 power generators went down concurrently, according to Doggett, who emphasized that his agency, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, planned to do a better job in the future of communicating outage problems to the public and state officials (sending e-mails in the middle of the night, for example, proved ineffective, he noted). Texas Wind Power Grows Along the Gulf Coast
On the 400,000-acre Kenedy Ranch along the southern Gulf Coast, the wind coming off the water nearly flattops the clusters of oak trees. Towering above the trees, above the long grasses, sand dunes, grazing cattle and the occasional antelope, are scores of wind turbines, each about as tall as a football field is long. “It’s always nice to be cranking,” said Daniel Pitts, who manages the wind plant for its owner, Iberdrola Renewables, as the machines spun in the breeze. Freeze knocked out coal plants and natural gas supplies, leading to blackouts
The operators of Texas’ electricity grid blamed myriad problems at power plants across Texas for last week’s rolling blackouts. But interviews and a review of documents by The Dallas Morning News reveal that the breakdown of a cluster of coal-fired plants in Central Texas was at the heart of the problem. To compound the problem, many of the natural gas-fueled plants that would normally fire up to restore power didn’t have enough gas. READ MORE »

Why Texas Is Using More Coal, Wind and Less Gas
When Texans turn on their lights, run their air conditioning or plug in their iPads, they are getting an increasing amount of power from the wind — and from coal plants. Figures released earlier this month show that last year, nearly 8 percent of the power on the state's electric grid was generated by wind. That's more than three times the national average. And because Texas recently added several coal-generating units, coal plants — for the first time in recent memory — produced more power than any other electricity source. Nuclear power's contribution held about steady, at 13 percent of generation. READ MORE »
