More Wind Jobs for Kansas
Wind turbine factory to open in Newton, Kan.
A Colorado company that has developed a smaller wind energy turbine will build its first manufacturing plant in south-central Kansas.
Executives of the company, New Millennium Wind Energy, joined Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and other officials in Newton last week to announce the development.
The plant will be built in Kansas Logistics Park. It’s expected to have 70 employees in the first year of operations, with plans to add 300 more jobs eventually.
New Millennium was founded three years ago to develop lightweight turbines for installation on the rooftops of commercial buildings, providing a direct source of electricity. The company’s CEO, Drew Thacker, says the Newton plant will build 35- by 28-foot turbines.
The plant is expected to begin operating by mid-2012.
