Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co has reached development deals for two new wind farms

OG&E lines up two more wind farms

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. announced Tuesday it has reached development deals for two new wind farms.

“We are pleased to take the next major step toward our goal to significantly increase our renewable generating capacity,” spokesman Brian Alford said.

Silver Spring, Md.-based CPV Renewable Energy Co. plans to build a 150-megawatt wind farm in Woodward County, and Edison Mission Energy of Irvine, Calif., plans a 120-megawatt wind farm near Taloga in Dewey County.

Both projects must be approved by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

OG&E has agreed to buy power generated by both wind farms for 20 years.

Former Corporation Commissioner Denise Bode, now CEO of the American Wind Energy Association, praised the deals.

“As a native of Oklahoma, I’m pleased to see these companies working to bring clean, renewable wind power to the citizens of the state,” she said in a news release. “Wind power creates good jobs and new sources of income for local communities, and helps protect consumers against fuel price increases.”

The new wind farms, which are expected to be completed late next year, will triple the amount of power that OG&E derives from wind.

The company — a unit of Oklahoma City-based OGE Energy Corp. — currently has 170 megawatts of wind capacity from two other wind farms near Woodward.

A third 100-megawatt farm is under construction.

The new projects will boost OG&E’s wind power capacity to 550 megawatts, enough to serve 125,000 homes on a typical day, the company said.

Alford said OG&E is negotiating with a company that would develop yet another 150-megawatt wind farm in Texas County.

The three companies were selected from more than 50 that responded to OG&E’s request for proposals earlier this year.

OG&E said it also expects to solicit additional proposals from wind developers in the next few months.
